The guidance program at Nicoma Park Elementary is aimed at helping children learn and develop to their highest potential: academically, personally, and socially. All students attend guidance classes, where character education and life lessons are taught. Many of the lessons revolve around our school wide "Character Word of the Month" (listed below). Individual and small group counseling are also available on an as needed basis.
In order to ensure that our school is a safe place for all children, Nicoma Park Elementary has a "No Bullying Policy".
Bullying is defined as someone using their power to hurt or threaten someone. Physical, emotional and social bullying are all types of bullying. When bullying occurs, learning decreases because the victim is fearful. Bullying is unacceptable and creates an unsafe learning environment for all.
The School Bullying Prevention Act was signed into Oklahoma State Law in April of 2002. The Choctaw/Nicoma Park School District adopted a Bullying/Harassment Policy in September of the same year. In this No-Bullying Program our students have and will continue to learn that everyone has a responsibility to report bullying when someone uses their power to hurt or threaten someone.
Tips for staying bully free: avoid bullies, act confident, tell an adult, stay calm, walk away, say “Stop it!” or “Leave me alone!”, stay with a group and if you are in danger, run.
