►Tutoring Lists are now available in the counselor’s office. Tutorial is from 7:45-8:06 am every morning. Homework Center is from 3:00 – 5:00 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Academic Intervention Saturday School is 8:00 – 11:00 am Sept. 20, 27, & Oct. 11 for 1st blk.
►ACT FREE Cram Sessions will be held at CHS, Monday – Wednesday, Oct. 20 – 22, from 3:30-5:00 pm for those interested. More details to follow.
►The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and Ladies Auxiliary is hosting their Patriotic Audio Essay Competition. Applications are available in the Counselor’s office. Grand prize is $30,000 scholarship. Open to students in grades 9-12. This year’s theme is “Service and Sacrifice by America’s Veterans Benefits Today’s Youth By…” Deadline is Nov. 1, 2008.
►2009 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards applications are now available online at www.prudential.com/spirit. When asked for the access key type the word spirit. Deadline for initial application is October 31, 2008. One student will be selected from CHS to compete at the state and national level. Awards range from $1,000-$5,000 and even a chance for an all-expense paid trip to Washington D.C. Awards based on community service.
►An ACT Preparation Course is being offered by the University of Oklahoma’s OUTREACH. It will be offered several times during the school year before each ACT national test date. Cost is $90. Call (405) 325-6897 for registration forms and more information.
►A PSAT Review is being offered by the University of Oklahoma’s OUTREACH. It will help prepare for the PSAT which can qualify a student for a National Merit Scholarship, it also prepares students for their SAT’s. It is Saturday, September 27, 2008. Cost is $80. Deadline to register is September 23rd. For more information or to register call (405) 325-6897.
►FAA Credit Union presents College Night 2008! Tuesday, October 7 from 6:00-8:30 at 10201 S. Western, Oklahoma City. Representatives and recruiters from colleges, trade schools, and military organizations will be there. There will also be a financial aid and prep-test seminar. Drawing for a scholarship. ►SWOSU Saturday – is a campus preview on Saturday, October 11, at 12:30pm in the Fine Arts Auditorium. Deadline to register is October 3. Day includes free football tickets to the game. Register by calling (580) 774-3782 or visit www.swosu.edu/admissions.
►Oklahoma Ready-Mixed Concrete Association Essay Contest is open to students ages 16-18. National winner will receive up to $5000 in scholarships. Possible theme: “Concrete’s Benefits to Society”. Deadline: November 10, 2006. For more information and other possible themes, go to www.ormca.com
►The Andrew Rice for U.S. Senate campaign is eagerly seeking interns for Fall 2008. Interns with the campaign will gain valuable experience in organizing a grassroots political campaign. Interested students can apply online or call (405) 606-2288. http://www.andrewforoklahoma.com/intern.asp.
Junior and Sophomore sign-up has started to take the PSAT test. This test is great practice for the ACT, and the juniors who score high enough will qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Program. Sophomores may take the test for practice for their junior year. The test will be on the morning of Wednesday, October 15th at EOC Tech Center. Please notice that this is the first day of fall break. The students are out of school on that date. This testing date is assigned to us by the testing company. Students wanting to test should reserve your slot by paying $15.00 to Brandi Jordan in the athletic office by Friday, October 10th. There are only 80 tests available on a “first come – first served” basis.
Chad Cargill ACT Prep Workshop – Friday, October 3, 2008. Workshop lasts from 8:00 am – 11:00 am. Cost is $25.00. Deadline for sign-up is September 26th, must pay to sign-up with Brandi in the Athletic Directors’ office. Mr. Cargill will have books and calculators for sale the day of the workshop.

Senior Information►Seniors who need recommendation letters from teachers, coaches or counselors should fill out a recommendation form available in the counselors’ office. This will aid in a more personal letter.►Mrs. Harvey, College Advisor, will be available on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:45 – 3:30 pm to look over scholarship applications or college applications for those needing help. Her room is C9.
►The Christian Connector provides a FREE Christian college information service as well as a $2,500 Christian college scholarship drawing. Log onto www.christianconnector.com to request information and enter the drawing.
►Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation Awards. Scholarship awards up to $20,000. Scholars are selected based upon academic achievement, their capacity to lead, and their hours of dedicated community service. ►The Horatio Alger Association offers college scholarships to help students overcome the financial barriers of pursuing higher education. Scholarships range in value from $2,500 to $20,000. To qualify, you must have at least a 2.0 GPA and require financial assistance to go to college. For more information and to apply, go to www.horatioalger.org/scholarships. Deadline is October 30, 2008. ►The Gates Millennium Scholars program is now available. Students are eligible to be nominated or recommended if they are African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American or Hispanic American, have a GPA of 3.3, have leadership abilities, and in financial need (determined through FAFSA). Deadline for online submissions is January 12, 2009 and paper submissions must be postmarked by December 12, 2008. Applications can be found at www.gmsp.org.
►The AES Engineers Scholarship is now available online at www.aesengineers.com/scholarships.htm. Deadline is September 21st. Students will submit an essay on one of the two topics that appear on the web site. The winner will receive $500. Full details are on the web site.
►SAE International 2009 Engineering Scholarship – SAE is proud to be able to offer more than 60 corporate and university-sponsored scholarships to qualified students who are interested in the study of engineering and related sciences. Applications are accepted September 1 through December 1, and most be postmarked by December 1, 2008. For full details, applications, and FAQs, visit www.sae.org/students/engschlr.htm.
►Masonic Charity Foundation is announcing the 2008-2009 Statewide Essay Contest for High School seniors in Oklahoma. First place is $2,000. Topic is: The Declaration of Independence states that “all men are created equal” How true was this concept then and is it true today? Contest rules are posted in your senior English teachers room or in the counseling office. Essays including cover letter must be turned into Mrs. Warren in the Counseling office by October 30.
►Ron Brown Scholar Program. Scholarship awards up to $40,000. Will start accepting applications Sept. 1, 2006. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen, African American, and be a current high school senior. Early deadline is November 1, 2008 which forwards applications to other scholarship avenues. Final deadline is January 9, 2009 and will be considered for Ron Brown Scholar Program only. Applications are online at www.ronbrown.org
►QuestBridge National College Match program helps outstanding low-income high school seniors gain admission and full four-year scholarships to some of the nation’s most selective colleges including; MIT, Stanford, and Yale Universities. The National College Match application is available on our website free of charge and is due on September 30, 2008. www.questbridge.org.
OSU Experience will be September 6 & October 4 in Stillwater and will include; an OSU football game, on-the-spot admission opportunities, student life/academic showcase, and campus tours. Sophomore Information► Sophomore of the Year Scholarship applications, sponsored by the Kiwanis Foundation of Choctaw and Nicoma Park, are available in the Counselors’ Office. Applicants should be active in clubs and organizations, demonstrate leadership ability, and show a desire to learn. Our chosen students will compete for a $600 scholarship for college. Deadline: November 14, 2008
PLAN Testing: All sophomores will be required to take the PLAN test. This is a Pre-ACT test and career interest inventory. Results will be given out during the January CHAT meetings. The test will be given at the Eastern OK County Tech Center on October 1st and 2nd. Buses will transport half of the sophomore class each day. After the test the tech center will provide lunch and give students an overview of the programs available at the Tech Center. There is no cost for testing or lunch.
OHLAP: Pick-up an application for the Oklahoma Higher Learning Access Program in the Counselors’ Office. This is a program to help students pay their college tuition if the family’s income is under $50,000 per year. The 10th grade year is the last year a family may register a student for this program!
Driver’s License: To get a driver’s license, students must have a form from Ms Dickey in the Counselors’ Office. She must verify that the student passed his/her 8th grade reading test and is enrolled at CHS. A student must request this form at least the day before he/she plans to take the driver’s test.
