Special education and related services are provided to those who meet
eligibility criteria in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities
Education Act (IDEA), Part B. As mandated by federal regulation, a pre-referral
procedure documenting the use of intervention in the regular classroom setting
is first required. If the child continues to experience difficulty, a
comprehensive evaluation may be indicated to determine whether or not he/she is
eligible for special education and related services. The comprehensive
evaluation consists of gathering and analyzing a variety of data including
teacher records, observations, and special testing. If a child is determined to
be eligible for services, a variety of programming options must be
considered. The child’s Individual Education Program (IEP) team, based on
individual student needs, makes programming decisions.
