This course traces the experiences of Africans in the Americas from 1500 to the present day.  In this course, students will explore history, politics, and culture.  Although the course proceeds in chronological order, lessons are also grouped by themes and trends in African American history.  Therefore, some time periods and important people are featured in more than one lesson.  

This course will be divided into two sections:  Historical Perspectives and Contemporary Perspectives. 

By providing historical perspectives, this course provides a comprehensive understanding of the roots of Native American culture.  The topics addressed include an exploration of Native American history in the arctic and subarctic, various regions of the U.S., and the development of Native American life. 

By providing contemporary perspectives, this course explores Native American worldviews, art, media perspectives on Native Americans, and contemporary perspectives and organizations.  It concludes by providing a global perspective by examining issues faced by indigenous people throughout the world. 

Did you know that American Sign Language (ASL) is the third most commonly used language in North America? This course will introduce you to vocabulary and simple sentences so that you can start communicating right away.  You will also explore Deaf culture - social beliefs, traditions, history, values, and communities influenced by deafness. 

This course will build upon the prior prerequisite course, to progress your communication skills and vocabulary.  You will learn about classifiers, glossing, and mouth morphemes, as well as how to give descriptions and directions.  You will also learn about sequencing, transitions, role shifts, and future tenses.  Students will learn how to tell a story and ask questions.  Speed, conversations, signing skills, and cultural awareness are characteristic of this course.

Follow your enthusiasm for space by introducing yourself to the study of astronomy. You will learn about the history of astronomy from ancient times to modern times. You will identify the movements of the sun, moon, planets, and stars across the sky. You will describe the formation of the solar system and the role of the sun and moon in the solar system. You will describe the causes of seasons on Earth. You will learn about stars, galaxies, and the Milky Way.  This course will include topics such as astronomy’s history and development, basic scientific laws of motion and gravity, the concepts of modern astronomy, and the methods used by astronomers to learn more about the universe. Further knowledge is gained through the study of galaxies and stars. Become familiar with the inner and outer planets of the solar system as well as the sun, comets, asteroids, and meteors. Additional topics include space travel and settlements as well as the formation of planets. 

Crime and deviant behavior rank at or near the top of many people’s concerns.  This course looks at possible explanations for crime from the standpoint of psychological, biological, and sociological perspectives, explores the categories and social consequences of crime, and investigates how the criminal justice system handles not only criminals but also their crimes.  Why do some individuals commit crimes and others do not? What aspects of our culture and society promote crime and deviance?  Why are different punishments given for the same crime? What factors shape the criminal case process? 

This course analyzes the conventions, elements, themes, and other characteristics of Gothic literature.  This course covers subject areas such as morality and spirituality in gothic poetry, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, dual personalities, Edgar Allan Poe, Dracula, gothic conventions across time, and many more. 

This course is intended as a practical, hands-on guide to help you understand graphic design concepts, graphic image creation, and image manipulation.  This course describes how to create images using color and typography, design elements, and design principles.  This course covers copyright laws and ethics related to the use of graphic design. This course will cover the advanced manipulation of images.  It will guide you on how to create graphic products such as logos, posters, and magazine covers.  It will cover multimedia and digital photography.

In this course, you will explore the anatomy and structure of the human body. Emphasis is placed on the physiology of the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, circulatory, nervous, respiratory, digestive, and reproductive systems.  Other topics covered include the chemical basis of life, cells and metabolism, tissues, hormones, and the endocrine system, special senses, the urinary system, and the lymphatic system, and immunity.  

Students will be introduced to basic medical language and terminology that they would need to enter a health care field.  Emphasis will be placed on definitions, proper usage, spelling, and pronunciation.  They will study word structure and parts, including roots, prefixes, and suffixes, as well as symbols and abbreviations.  They will examine medical terms from each of the body’s main systems, including skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, urinary, nervous, endocrine, reproductive, and lymphatic systems, and sensory organs.  In addition, students will learn proper terminology from common tests, procedures, pharmacology, disease, and conditions. 

Music is part of everyday life and reflects the spirit of our human condition.  To know and understand music, we distinguish and identify cultures on local and global levels.  This course provides students with an aesthetic and historical perspective of music, covering a variety of styles and developments from the Middle Ages through the 21st Century.  Students acquire basic knowledge and listening skills, making their future music experiences more informed and enriching. 

This one-semester course is intended for you to familiarize yourself with various myths, legends, and folklore from around the world. You will identify the main characters of various dynastic dramas, love myths, and epic legends and describe their journeys. You will trace the evolution of folklore and describe folktales from around the world.

Your body is a machine that has certain needs—if you treat it well, it should be able to serve you well. But what can you do to promote a fit and healthy body? A course in physical education can show you. By definition, physical education is instruction in exercise and physical activity. It teaches you how to maintain your personal fitness, how to measure different aspects of physical fitness, and how to avoid injury while exercising. It’s all about getting active and setting your body in motion. By measuring health and fitness with objective data, it’s possible to improve your health in a methodical way. Exercise helps you feel good about yourself and helps you sidestep the health problems that often accompany poor levels of fitness.

Do you strive to gain more confidence when speaking in front of people? Learn techniques from famous speakers throughout history while learning what it takes to make a great speech. Develop skills that will serve you well throughout your career and personal life.

This course will be divided into two sections:  

In Psychology, Part A, you will trace the history of psychology and examine key psychological theories. You will discuss human development and explain how the nervous and endocrine systems affect human development and behavior. You will explain various theories related to language development and acquisition. You will discuss the influence of heredity, environment, society, and culture on human behavior.

In Psychology, Part B, you will explain the established theories of cognitive, psychosocial, and moral development. You will identify the factors that influence interpersonal relationships, recognize the origins and effects of violence, and describe prevention and treatment options for addictive behavior. You will explain abnormal behavior and describe different types of psychological disorders. You will trace the history of psychological counseling and therapy and describe strategies used for problem solving and coping with stress. You will describe some key statistical concepts used in psychological research and testing, and identify career opportunities in psychology.

This elective course is intended as a practical, hands-on guide to introduce you to the field of sociology. You will explore the evolution of sociology as a distinct social science, learn about sociological concepts and processes, and discuss how the individual relates to society. You will also learn about the influence of culture, social structure, socialization, and social change in today's society.

This course is intended as a practical, hands-on guide to help you understand the concepts of website design and concepts related to desktop publishing and multimedia. This course will cover careers in web technology, uses of web technology, and emerging trends in web technology.  It also covers principles of design and the creation of graphics. In addition, this course covers legal and ethical issues related to Internet and website design, web maintenance, and web administration.  This course covers using HTML, style sheets, JavaScript, DHTML, and XML.   

EDGE is an acronym for Educating the Digital Generation with Excellence. We believe EDGE serves students individual academic needs in our school district while providing a community-oriented experience.

The EDGE program is a free online program for all CNP students grades 6-12th. We operate as a school within a school. Your child will still be enrolled in their local school within the Choctaw-Nicoma Park School District while also enrolled in online coursework through EDGE. You will receive communication from both the local school site and the EDGE program. The school site may communicate about student schedules, extracurricular activities, school pictures, fundraisers, special events, etc. The EDGE program will communicate about curriculum, software, attendance, grades, and various opportunities specifically designed for online students. The online program will be available to students 24 hours a day/7 days a week and will provide an opportunity for student to self-pace through weekly assigned coursework on a flexible schedule. According to the instructors' certification area, students in grades 6-12 will be assigned several instructors to assist and monitor the students' academic progress.

The EDGE program will utilize the Edmentum online software by providing Courseware for grades 6-12. The software is web-based, and students will access a website, log in using a username and password that will give access to the dashboard for their grade level courses. parents will also receive a Sensei for Families account with allows parents view-only access to their child's Courseware account. In addition, families should expect to communicate with their instructors regularly and advocate for their child's needs when additional assistance is needed.

Students must make at least a semester-long commitment to the EDGE program. All students have until the first ten days of school to commit to EDGE or in-person school, this applies to both first and second semesters. Students who change their minds after the deadline will be allowed to switch at the start of the new semester.

Courseware Information
Our school had purchased a subscription to an online course and curriculum program called Edmentum Courseware for grades 6-12. As a part of our subscription, your student can access Courseware free of charge anywhere that internet access is available. Courseware has site-wide security features in place to protect your student’s personal information.

Using Courseware from Home

Courseware is completely web-based, which allows students to access the program from any computer with an internet connection and a standard web browser. Unit activity results are automatically recorded for teacher review, including results from activities completed outside of school.

The program consists of courses, and each course is broken up into units. Each unit has activities like pretests, tutorials, practice activities, discussion posts, mastery tests, and posttests.

If your student needs additional support getting logged in and navigating key areas of the program from home, we’ve included instructions here.

Students: Follow the instructions below to access the Edmentum from home.

1. Go to: https://login.edmentum.com/
2. Enter your Account Login, Username, and Password then click on Log in to your Edmentum Account. You should receive your login credentials from the EDGE office, via your school email. 
3. On the home page you will see a list of Active Assignments. 
4. Access your courses under Active Assignments by clicking on the All Activities button found on the bottom left of a course card. 
5. Once inside a course, you can view Instructions, filter activities by progress, and click on individual assignments to begin and/or complete work.

Students: Follow the instructions below to access reports and review your progress.

1. To view reports, navigate to the top bar of your account and click on the All My Work button. 
2. From the All My Work section, you can create a portfolio report or a progress report. 
3. Create a portfolio report by clicking on the Create Portfolio Report button found on the left-hand side of the page. 
4. Create a progress report by clicking on the Create Progress Report button found under each course card. 

What is Sensei for Families? 
Sensei for families allows a parent or guardian to have a their own parent login account with Edmentum Courseware. Through this account, an adult can view his or her student's progress, current grades, and time on task. 

How do I sign up for Sensei for Families?
Registration emails will be sent out straight from Edmentum to EDGE families from the district contact list. If you do not see the registration email in your inbox, check your spam folder or contact Brandy Trotter, btrotter@cnpschools.org.

PowerSchool serves as the official grade book and student information system for the CNP school district. If there is a discrepancy between Edmentum and PowerSchool, use the PowerSchool information as the most accurate record.

Who do I contact if I have a question or concern about.....

Positive, consistent two-way communication among students, parents, and instructors is essential to success in an online learning environment. Please email instructors using their CNP school email instead of the email within Courseware or Google Classroom.

The EDGE program will follow the approved CNP school calendar for the given school year.  In the case of a district-wide inclement weather day, EDGE students will be in session or out of session on the same days as traditional students.  We will make up any days missed on the designated inclement weather days in the spring semester.  Courseware allows us to schedule holiday breaks in the software at the administrative level.  Students will not have assignments
due during a scheduled holiday break.

6th-12th grade students will make a semester-long commitment to the virtual program. Students are encouraged to provide their own technology device with a Google Chrome internet browser and access to the internet. However, the school district can provide technology devices and hotspots for families who request assistance. These devices will be checked out in August and returned in May through the site media center.

Students have access to the school library/media resources and services at their designated school sites. Choctaw-Nicoma Park students participating in the EDGE program are held to high academic standards. EDGE students are always expected to conduct themselves with the highest academic integrity. Students caught plagiarizing, copying, or cheating may receive a zero for their work, academic probation, or virtual program removal.

Students enrolled in the CNP EDGE Virtual Academy are eligible to participate in extracurricular activities at their school with the site principal’s permission beginning in the seventh grade. If students choose to participate in an extracurricular activity offered as a class during the regular school day (choir, band, AG, athletics, etc.), they will be required to attend those classes on campus during the regular school day following state and district attendance policies. Students
will be responsible for their transportation to and from the activities.

CHS students will have the opportunity to take online classes during the school day. Virtual students with a hybrid schedule will not remain on campus during virtual class periods. Students (or parents) will be responsible for their transportation to and from on-campus classes.

The EDGE program uses the Courseware curriculum created by the Edmentum Company and managed by district instructors. All courses taught through the EDGE Virtual Academy will meet the grade-level Oklahoma Academic Standards. The Oklahoma Academic Standards serve as expectations for what students should know and do by the end of the school year. Click on the following link to view the Oklahoma Academic Standards.

If a CHS EDGE student drops a virtual course after ten days they will 1) receive a no credit (NC) on their transcript or 2) be given another virtual course to be completed at an accelerated rate and will receive the grade for completed work at the end of the grading period. A student is not allowed to drop a course after five weeks, instead, they will receive the grade earned.

Students can participate in their regularly scheduled SEARCH day by catching the bus at their assigned school site or being transported directly to the SEARCH program by a parent/guardian.

CHS EDGE students can still participate in concurrent enrollment and receive tuition paid by the state of Oklahoma. Graduates from Choctaw High School can receive the Ticket to Rose Scholarship for two years of free tuition at Rose State College.

Students with Special Needs

Parents of children with disabilities will want to meet with their IEP team to determine the least restrictive environment and the best placement for their child.  Our district provides a homebased option for our students, however, this must be approved by the IEP team.

• Students who do not log in to complete assignments for ten consecutive days without prior approval will be withdrawn from CNP Schools for non-attendance.
• Students who fail two or more courses in the EDGE program at the end of a grading period will be re-enrolled in traditional brick and mortar schools for the following grading period.
• Students who demonstrate improper use of school-related technology or violate school technology policies will lose their online privileges and be returned to traditional school.
   

EDGE students who are enrolled in the full-time virtual academy or completing elective courses on campus will be subject to district and state attendance policies (Oklahoma Statute 70 O.S. 3-145.8)

CNP EDGE students will be marked present if…

They complete at least one assignment per week per course.

• Students who know in advance of a scheduled absence should work ahead to complete assignments in advance of the absence.
• Students who have been marked absent for ten consecutive days will be withdrawn from the program for non-attendance.
• If work is not completed for the week and prior arrangements have not been made with the instructor, zeros will be given.  It will be at the instructor’s discretion if work can be made up for full credit, partial credit, or for a maximum percentage value.
• the EDGE week runs Friday at midnight-Thursday at 11:59 pm.

Instructors are expected to give at least two grades per week in each course. Student eligibility reports are run on Monday morning.

PowerSchool is the official grade book and should reflect the student’s current grade in the course. The grades and pacing/student progress in Courseware may or may not match the grade and pacing/student progress in PowerSchool. Parents are responsible for monitoring grades in PowerSchool.

Instructors should communicate weekly assignments to students through email or Google Classroom and unlock at least a week’s worth of lessons in Courseware by no later than Friday each week.  Remember the EDGE week runs Friday at midnight-Thursday at 11:59 pm.

In a typical school day, students will spend about 360 minutes/6 hours in class and studying coursework. Online students should expect to dedicate anywhere from 4-6 hours working on their coursework as well.

Many parents have requested sample schedules to assist them in setting up a successful at-home learning environment. Although every family has different needs and you are not bound to these schedules, we have attached a few to assist you with getting started.

Tutorials provide the lesson material. Redoing tutorials will unlock mastery tests until at least 80% mastery is reached.

Mastery Tests check student understanding of the tutorial and are similar to a homework assignment at the end of a lesson. If students do not show mastery (80% or higher), they can redo the tutorial to get another chance to score higher on the mastery test.

Post Tests are provided at the end of a unit or set of tutorials and mastery tests. These are the equivalent of a chapter or unit test.

Guided Notes are available within the tutorials for some courses. 

Locked Assignments: Instructors will unlock at least a week’s worth of assignments at a time for students to complete. Instructors can lock tasks after weekly due dates have passed.

Current Grade shows the student’s average on the work they have completed. The current grade is the one students and parents should be looking at to check progress.

Course Grade reflects the student’s average on all the work for the entire semester, including zeros for all the incomplete assignments. The course grade will be incomplete and will show a lower average until the student finishes the entire course.

Courseware provides guided notes through many of the tutorials.
The software can read each lesson in Courseware aloud to the student.

Know yourself as a student:

• If keeping an agenda was helpful for you as a traditional student, consider keeping an agenda as a virtual student.
• If you know you will be distracted by your phone, leave it in another room while completing your assignments. You can also set restrictions, so you only have access to essential apps during school hours.
• If you have had success with other online resources (Khan Academy, LearnZillion, etc.), use them for supplemental resources.
