The Choctaw-Nicoma Park School District firmly believes the safety of students and staff is the number one priority during severe weather outbreaks. The district fully understands parents and/or legal guardians of district students know the best option for their family in regards to severe weather planning, preparation and protection. In the event severe weather becomes likely, parents and/or guardians have the option of removing their student(s) from school anytime during the school day, as long as it doesn't impede the safety and security of other school students and staff. If there is a severe weather event during the school day and students and staff have to be sheltered the school will not check out students during this time because students and staff will be in safe rooms/sheltered areas.
Should severe weather become an immediate threat during the school day, students and staff will be placed in the identified safest place in the building. The majority of our buildings have safe rooms available. These safe rooms are rated to withstand the most violent severe weather events including wind, hail and tornadoes. In our schools without safe room access, we have identified the safest places in which students will be located and those students will be moved to these locations. All schools practice safety drills for severe weather.
Buses will be held and not be in transit when there is immediate pending severe weather expected. If severe weather is unexpected and a bus is in route the bus will seek safety at the nearest school.
